About Jonathan McLean
NCAS Level 1, Ass. Dip ES
Jonathan Mclean has had a long and successfully career in training the equine. Starting as a teenager on King Island, Jonathan worked as a Jockey and Track Rider. This ultimately lead to steeple chasing and hurdle racing in Tasmania, then to breaking in race horses with his brother Andrew Mclean. During this time Jonathan worked with Andrew and Manuela Mclean (Australian Equine Behaviour Centre) to develop a training system which Jonathan still uses to this day.
Jonathan has spent time in Hong Kong breaking in and training racehorses for the Hong Kong Jockey Club over a five year period.
Jonathan is best known for his success with in Eventing. Kildalton Castle was Jonathan’s first three star horse, this horse successfully completed Australia’s first International 3*** event ever, held at Spray Farm in Victoria.
Woodmount Lanark was Jonathan's most well-known and successful eventer, a horse he brought as a yearling from the TB sales in 1991. “Kellogs” carried Jonathan to two 4**** qualifications, and many wins and placing at international level.
Jonathan has had many successful event horses including Grand Joker, sold to Andrew Hoy in 2006, and Cape Wickham, now a Dressage horse at Small Tour with his partner Caroline Bentley.
Jonathans current horse “Brinkin Fitwilliam” promises to be one of his most successful yet, never out of the top 3 in the Dressage, and huge scope, speed and power for the jumping phases. It is hoped he will have his first 3* start late 2013 - early 2014.
Jonathan is based in Victoria, where he is lecturer or Equine Studies at NMIT, as well as a coach privately. Jonathan is a NCAS 1 coach, and teaches clinics in Tasmania, Victoria and King Island.
